Short version is;

Only time you need to adjust the SU carbs is after a rebuild, set 'em and 
forget 'em.

I have a 3 x 5 sign in my toolbox that says "It's the ignition stupid."

I do keep in practice tuning carbs helping people who don't have a sign.
