Barrie, How much suspension travel do you have out back, both in bump and droop? There is certainly no performance benefit from going over the axle, and it's a LOT more straightforward to go under the rear axle. Just get your buddy to build the exhaust with the rear chassis of the car supported on axle stands, so that the axle is in maximum droop position, and you'll never have any axle to exhaust clearance issues.
