Are they side bowls (HS-4) or bottom bowls (HIF-4)? The stock ones are
the bottom bowl type, but I have seen ones that have non-original side
bowls put on.

If they're side bowls, Stan down at British Racing Green told me that some
of the seals they had got in round about the time I rebuilt the HS-4's on
my '71 were not of the best quality... the seals he was talking about were
the little rubber ones that go in where the jet hose enters the float
bowl. (Try as I might, I could not get that sucker to not leak, until Stan
gave me some different seals!) Stan assured me that Jim Knight was
resolving the problem with their supplier, and that all would be well
soon.

As for rebuilding yourself vs. getting Apple Hydraulics to do it, the
carbs are perfectly straightforward to do yourself with one exception:
Throttle shaft bushes. If these are worn they will have to be done by an
outfit like Apple.
