>car would not start due to a 'stuck' starter. I put the car in gear and
pushed and shoved a bit. When I got back in it started with no problem
at all. Now I am unsure of whether the pushing and shoving actually did
anything, or whether I just expended sufficient sweat and suffered the
<right amount of mental anguish to appease MOWOG. Any ideas ?

It could be one of two things:
 1) The ring gear is chewed up a bit and/or the starter pinion is worn
and the starter pinion jammed in the ring gear. When you rocked it in
gear, it popped it out. Since you made no mention of the starter turning
and suddenly stopping, nor any *SPANG* sound when rocking, I'll assume it's
not this. That's a good thing.
 2) One of the windings or commutators (?) on your starter has gone bad,
and when you tried to start it, it started to engage on a dead spot.
since the pinion was engaged when you rocked it, you moved the starter to
a good spot, and it was able to turn over. If it's this, "all" it will
take is changing the starter.
If it's number one, it means replacing the ring gear.
Solution #2 is to keep a BFS (Big F***ing Screwdriver) in the car, and
whenever it happens, you crawl as far under the car as you can, and use
the BFS to either pry the gear loose, or turn the starter a bit. Somewhat
effective, but a poor show when on a date.
