Brake Fluid

I  DO NOT want to start the DOT 3,4,5 thread again, but I have a question.
My 77 has a warning sticker on it that states, in part,
"Use DOT 3 fluid only" so the question is:  Is that simply because DOT 4,5
etc. were not around yet?  Will read archived posts for problems, opinions,
arguments, etc. so please just answer the question and save some bandwidth
for important stuff.  TIA
