Rear Axle Secrets

HiEveryone,
        It's the novice asking those questions again.  Thought I'd check
the level of gear oil in the differential.  1/2" ratchet is too big, 3/8"
is too small, allen wrenches are hexagonal, I thought this would be easy.
Since I'll probably mess things up if I use the wrong tool (I usually do),
what is the right one?  This is a 71 MGBGT.  Thanks.  Nina
