before you put the thermostat back in, check it in hot water with a
meat/candy thermometer... make sure it opens fully just above its rated temp.
You might just have a malicious temp gauge or sticky thermostat. BTW don't
run the B without the T-stat, it slows the water down enough to be properly
cooled and problems result without it.
Otherwise, you could have too lean a mixture, old gunked up radiator or water
passages, bad points, plugs, timing, valve settings, or a cracked head. Start
with the simple stuff, and work through... there's more to hot running than
just the cooling system at times.
Oh, and if you have (or buy one for 10 bucks) a digital thermometer, break
loose the water temp sending unit right by the thermostat housing with the
engine running (5/8 wrench) just enough to get a little water running out,
and measure the temp of the water there... it's a good way to decide if the
gauge is wrong before you chase too many other paths on this one...
