BGT Rear Deck Counterbalance Springs

The cheap chrome cover that covers the springs that counterbalance the rear
deck lid in my BGT have broken up. VB has replacements, but a quick look
makes it appear as if I have to remove the whole assembly, release the
spring, replace the cover, and the try to counterbalance the whole thing
again. 

Has anyone done this replacement? Please share your experience.
