If the wave shape changed such that
the troughs were wider than the peaks or the output were intermittent due to
bad brushes the average voltage would reduce and this would be indicated on
the meter.

Some alternator problems may look like it is charging OK - i.e.
14v at idle with minimal load, but you will find the voltage dropping quite
rapidly with just small increases in load.
