Most of the mounts I have seen specifically sold for use in cars are
available at most large camera stores for photographers. They are made by
the Italian company, Manfrotto. In the USA they are sold under the name
Bogen, but I think Bogen is mainly in the states. Find a camera store that
sells to pros and ask about Manfrotto products.
Go to www.manfrotto.com and click on the Products tab. Then click on "Photo
Tripods and Heads" and choose "General Accessories." Look for Product #035
called Super Clamp. This will easily clamp around a rollover bar, and any
weakness in the mounting will be if the bottom of the camera rips off.
They also make a suction cup mount (#241V) which will hold a camera to glass
or paint. Go back to the Product page and click on the "Arms and Bracket for
Cameras" link. They use these for moving shots from a car in the movies. (I
used to sell all this stuff.)
You will find that buying from a decent camera store will cost a lot less
than buying from a company that sells these same clamps to car owners and
racers.
You may also check for Matthews products, but they may be harder to find in
Australia. Their web site is www.matthewsgrip.com, and expect to send a
weekend looking at all their goodies! They have a stud that you can weld to
the car, then choose a variety of clamps to attach to the stud.
