You are correct, and it supplies initial excitation current to the
alternator. Without this the alt may delay charging until revved to 2k or
3k, but on brand-new alts it may not charge at all. If you unplug the
connector from the alt and ground the brown/yellow in the alt with the
ignition, the warning light should glow. If that works, but it does not
glow when plugged in, then the alt is bad.
