I have the same height problem with my hoist and one I borrowed prior to
buying my own. Just have to jack the front of the car up a couple inches.
I put both jack stands under the center cross member right next to my jack.
They end up on the outer edge, but hold fine.

Carl,
Have you checked clearance on the lift? I just bought a 2T folding unit
from Harbor Freight, and although it fits easily between the wheels, it does
not clear the suspension vertically. I'll have to buy new wheels, which can
be a bit expensive.
