The butterflies of the carbs that I rebuilt two years ago on the 67B had
periodically began to stick open last summer.Upon disassembly today, two of
the new throttle shaft bushings (silver colored ones from Moss, about 1/2
inch long) have developed a crack (one has a hole in it) causing the
throttle shafts on both carbs to bind.
I've started the process to rebush them again, using the home made apparatus
that Ann and Jake Snyder recommended. I have an extra set of bushes, not
realizing that the carb kits came with them. These extra bushes are bronze
colored and about a 1/4 inch longer than the ones supplied in the repair
kits. I installed one (glued it in with red threadlock) and later noticed it
is protruding from the linkage side about 1/16 inch beyond the carb body. I
presume I'll need to grind this off, and if so how would I best do this with
the bush already installed in the body? Before installing the other three,
what is the best method to cut the bushings off before installation without
damaging them in a vice? I guess I could put an old throttle shaft into the
new bush and then clamp it into the vice before cutting? I shouldn't need to
grind off the bushings on the outer side of the carb (non-linkage side),
should I?
I'm guessing that part of the problem of the new bushes failing, is that I
installed the shorter ones last time and put them even with the outside of
the carb body. Then I filled the 1/8 inch space on the butterfly side with
JR Weld (with the shaft partially inserted to avoid JR Weld inside the
bushing) to prevent weird airflow patterns around the shaft. This epoxy may
have deteriorated slightly causing the problem-though it didn't appear to
have.
Happy New Year,
Monte
