Fast idle cam plate on SU4 - 62 MGA

The fast idle cam plate on my 62 MGA is connected via the first opening 
(which probably is labeled "1") and there are two other positions 
labeled "2" and "3".  Under what condition(s) would I want to connect 
using position 2 or 3 and what would be the resulting change?
