Check your local library and some of the back issues of a four wheel drive
magazine. Gear swaps are a pretty hot topic among the 4X4 guys and gals.
There have been at least two or three in the last year, unfortunately I
don't keep the magazines or I could give you more detail (Peterson's
Off-Road, 4X4 Power are usually good ones). Also, the crush sleeve acts to
set the placement of the pinion in relation to the ring's face (fore and
aft). They are not that difficult to set up, but are very unforgiving of a
poor job. I once reduced an IHC Scout to a front wheel drive in about 3
weeks when I tried to "re-adjust" the gear lash in the rear diff. (it was
making a little noise "tick-tick") It started howling, I thought I could
make it home; it quit howling; I had to put it into 4 wheel drive to get
home.
