It is a general misconception that all stainless steel is non magnetic, This
is not true. Stainless steel has 3 groups-A) Austenitic, B) Martensitic, C)
Ferritic. Group A has the lowest carbon content (AISI type 304,316) which IS
non magnetic. Group B a hardenable grade (type 420) used for knives and
razor blades, is magnetic. Group C which is also known as Stainless Iron,
(type 430) It has a lower carbon content (16-18%) than Iron which makes it
corrosion resistant, is very workable and inexpensive. This is what these
trim parts are made from.
Now to prove it to yourselves, go find a razor blade that says stainless
steel on it and pick it up with a magnet.
