I just got off a similar rumbling problem that was prevalent at freeway 
speeds of 65 mph.  It showed up when I would back off on the throttle and 
was minor during acceleration.
Looking at it from an alignment pit aty the local garage, I found a few 
bolts loose on the pinion flange for the differential.
I tightened them up and the vibration went away.  Of course the pinion and 
crown are probably trashed and the pinion would have to be reset.

Now I have to deal with a suspension problem.  Lotta problems these old 
beasts are!

Does it only happen when the AC is on? Does it only do this at speed or can 
you re-create the problem when the truck is chained down to jack 
stands.This way you could look at the the drive line to see if it is 
vibrating.

Bob and all, Just bought the truck today so I haven't had time to really
get into it yet. The noise is very rythmic and usually only after I hit
55. Someone else has suggested ujoints also. I'm not sure this is the
case as my F*rd had the exact same type of rythmic pulse to it, but it
only did it at 75+. I had changed all the ujoints in the rear within
6months and it made the same noise before and after the ujoint change.
The dirveshaft had been custom built less than 2yrs before. The truck
did not feel like it was speeding up or slowing down any.
        The truck does not do it when it is wound up to aprox. the same rpm and
drivetrain speed in first or second gear, only in third and only at 55+.
        I will still check ujoints and the possible carrier bearing. Bob Adler
recently suggested that wheel bearings can sometimes be the culprit for
other problems and although his advice was not directed to me, I will
check this also. Kevin Lake also pointed at the carb as the possible
demon and this to will receive my attention....
