Smokey,
Normally a water pump circulates water through the radiator and back into
the block. The normal check is to run the engine with the radiator cap off
and let it come up to operating temp. The still water visible in the top of
the radiator should start circulating when the thermostat opens. Use your
wifes candy thermometer and see if this occurs around 180 degrees. If it
never does, take out the thermostat and try again. If it circulates , the
problem is likely the thermostat.
If it works as planned, the pump could still be bad so you have to watch
the pump as it runs and see if a drip of water comes out of the shaft area.
If you see one drop it is shot.
