Pinion seal is new and does not leak, only at the base of the nut.

A '62 rear could be a Dana44/60 model, they use what is called an "Oil
Slinger" that should be against the outer pinion bearing. This is supposed
to deflect the oil out and away. The difficult part is cenetring the slinger
around the pinion shaft, I (well my Dad did, cause I can't braze worth a
sh&t) brazed a pinion shim in the slinger to center it.
May be your problem, not sure.
