I glad you mentioned the manual.  I have the owners manual - no help.  I
also purchased the Chevrolet Shop Manual.  However there seems to be various
flavors of this manual.  I ordered the truck manual for 1946.  What I
received was for a manual for 1942-1946 Passenger Cars and 1942-1946 Trucks.
Is there just a 1946 TRUCK manual.  What manual are you referring to?

In my manual the wording on page 5-8 is "Reassemble articulating links,
pins, friction springs and locks to new brake shoes and assemble shoes to
anchor plate."

This is all well and good however they do not state what side goes out for
the locks.  And if the springs on the smaller pin should be onto inside or
outside.  In the (dark) photos sometime the springs look on the outside (fig
17) and sometime they look on the inside (fig 1, fig 21).

What side should these locks and springs be placed on?

Hi Jim:

no - one can never be too anal with brakes.  There is definitely a
certain way the whole unit assembles.  I could explain it to you (as I
can do brakes with my eyes closed) but the manual actually has a very
detailed section on brakes.   The 2 pad lengths you describe is correct.
