I just bought an old 50 COE and was thinking changing axles to newer
models would make parts much easier to find. Sometimes factories use
the same dimensions for years, even when parts look different, to save on
tooling costs. My question is: How many years of big trucks would use
the same spring spacing? I would like to use newer wheels also. I know
you can change spring pads, have done that in past.-OR- can newer
backing plates and hubs be used on both front and rear axles to use
new brakes and wheels? My 52 shop man has frame dimensions shown,
does anyone have these for the 60-66 trucks and the 67-72 and the 73-when
ever? Most beg trucks have common frame width between brands to
accommidate body builders. I'm toying with idea of putting one-ton
dually size axles in and remove lots of spring leaves to make it a
lighter hauling, easier riding truck, lower truck w/16" wheels and tires.
This won't be a work truck and capacity isn't important.
