Ed, I'm painting a set of inner fenders right now. My situation may be a
little different than yours because my inners each had deep gashes abd debts
which required a lot of pannel beating and brazing to make right, It wasn't
that much extra effort, therefore, to smooth out some of the ripples that
were built in to them originally.
I sanded down to clean steel, then sprayed dp90 black epoxy primer (no etch
as I've never had any trouble getting dp primer to stick), then some light
bondo, sanded back with 220 grit, then several coats of black polyester
sandable primer (Pacific coast laquer co.) sanded with 220 to 330. Finally
clv 9000 black polyurethane in a couple of levels sanded with 400 wet, a
couple more coats followed by 600, 1000 and 1500 wet.
After that it's just rubbing out.
This is arguably overkill, or might be if they hadn't been dinged up bad.
Jim Forbes says the factory simply dipped the bare steel into vats of paint
and let them run dry.
Since these pieces do take a fair amount of abuse from pebbles, grease,
brake fluid, fumbled socket wrenches, etc, I though it made sense to take
some trouble over them. Although they're not visible from the outside, they
do frame the engine when you pop the hood.
