Jeff, the odometer stopped on my '59 and it caused the needle to start
jumping. I replaced the odometer wheel assembly with one from a '83 Chevy
(same thing but plastic). In the process I had the hole thing apart. The
speedo needle has a cup with a spring on it thats driven by being close to a
kinda U shaped piece that spins real fast. I guess it turns the cup potion
(attached to the needle), just by being close to it. Be careful taking this
apart, you'll bend that delicate spring. I bent mine and had to fool around
and get it back to the right shape (the spring from the '83 was not the
same). I twisted on the spring until I could a 1000 rpm drill to show 60mph.
Some of the gears and other parts from the '83 speedo are the same.
