Check to make sure BOTH sides of the axle only made two turns.  
I have never seen a TF rear axle with a lower (numerically) ratio than
3.08:1.
GMC master parts manual lists 3.08, 3.90, 4.11 and 4.56 as standard or
optional 
ratios on half ton GMC models from 55.2 thru 59.

I found a rear end in the old junkyard today which has me puzzled.  It is
six lug, marked 59 chev and looks like that's what it is.  When I spin the
yoke, the axle revolves just over 2 times.  Was there a
2-point-something-to-1 rear end in 59?  If so, what engine / tranny did it
take?

If not, what the heck could it be?
