Mike,
I'm going through that drill now also! :)
The exhaust pipe is nominal 2" because of descriptions of the internal central
muffler pipe being 1.75" and smaller than external pipe..in the shop manual. My
50 is stock and the header pipe off the manifold was 2" and it is original as
far as I can tell. There should be a bracket that supports the muffler with an
external strap and a tail pipe support clamp that is off the frame just a couple
of feet back. Yes the exhaust is generally straight back, over the axle and
under the bumper.

The 1948-49s used "reverse" flow mufflers and 50-51 are "straight through"
types. Not sure if Chevy Duty replacements follow that spec but that's the
idea.

On mine, it's just as you say. It goes all the way back to the bumper on the
drivers side. I'm guessing that it is 1 1/2" Dia.

didnt get much response to my exhaust question a few days ago but thanks
to
those of you who tried i am scheduled to have an exhaust system put on my
suburban in the morning this is on my 50 suburban 216 stocker my main
question is where does the tailpipe go? all the way to the rear bumper?
drivers side?
right now it only has a small turndown pipe after the muffler also what is
the best diameter pipe to use for a stock 216? thanks as usual i
dont
want to do it and then find out it is all wrong
