If it were me I would not mix the two. Anyways the thompsons is only a
water blocker similar to a wax for your automotive paint. you have to
re-apply it every couple of years on the deck boards.
A good spar varnish is about he best. Marine varnish is the best for
weathered applications. It also takes many coats (4-5) to deal with sand
road salt and the like if your truck is a driver.
Make sure to do the edges and sand woth 000 steel wool, tack cloth between
the first 3 coats. The last coat use a nylon scratchy pad (fine grit of
~300 or better) and then tack cloth. You are not trying to bite the finish
too much but more to make it smooth and glossy. Make sure also you do the
sides and especially the end grain of the wood. It will take more sealer
there than anywhere. Also make sure you don't shake the can, stir it too
hard, or scrape the brush on the rim of the can, dip it and tap on the inner
side. This will prevent the vast majority of air bubbles in the finish.
