I have used the torch and putty knoife method, and it works well but just 
remember you are only softening the undercoating not making it liquid. If 
you heat the metal too much you can actually make it warp, not the frame 
obviously but body panels can. After you get most of it
off and AFTER! you have put the torch away. You can use
a rag with enamel reducer to remove the rest of the residue, this does two 
things, removes the remaining undercoating and also cleans and preps the 
surface for paint.
