Welcome to the List John,

Looks like a nice solid truck!

1958 was the first year Chevrolet used two digits to identify the series and
the use of the series nick names (Apache, Viking and Spartan). You are
correct in thinking 40 = 4000, 50 = 5000, etc.

There were two wheelbases available in the 40 series(1-1/2 ton). The Series
Designations are: "4A" is a 4100 with a 132.5" wheelbase and the "4B" is a
4400 with a 156.5" wheelbase. 4A or 4B will be the first two digits on the
serial number located on the door post.

If you check your engine serial number it will more than likely end with
"JC" indicating it is a 235 6 cylinder in a series 4000 truck.

The hand brake on the transmission is standard on all trucks 1 ton and
larger.

The single speed rear is also standard, with a vacuum shift 2 speed being
optional.
