If all else fails,, You might try using a 55-59 TF bell housing and use the 
starter that mounts on the  bell housing,, I assume the bell housing you have 
is probably that one any way since it fits a V-8, and small block v-8 wernt 
availbie before 55,, the bell housing mount starters work just fine , I have it 
on two of my trucks,its the same basic delco starter ans solinoid as the newer 
ones,it just mounts differently it may have a different starter drive and the 
nose is flange mount with three holes,, but function and integrity is the same. 
ask your local parts store for a V-8 starter for a 57 chevy truck with standard 
shift,, they should be able to get one for you to try out.
