r12 is the old r134a is the new and the other is a hybrid or mix of r12 and 
another component.

the "its not as cold" quote comes from the volume.... you need more 134a and 
work it more to get the same cold from r12.

I have r12 in my c10 and I cant put it past bi-level without getting a 
sweater, the 134a system in a similar truck with the same volume system 
needs to go to max to get me there. When we resized the 134a truck system it 
is very close to the r12 in "cold".

with the cost of r12 stedily climbing and its eventual unavaliblity, the 
logical choice is to carefully size your system (+ some) and get the r134a 
system
