I can get the part number for the 55-59 270 distributor from home tonight if
someone else has access to the 235 distributor part number for comparison.

Hey Dustin, can you share a little more detail please?

What did you do to with the shaft to build a longer tang?

Does anyone know if the distributor in a 235 is the same as a GMC 270? I
have a 235 distributor I'd be much happier to disassemble than the one
currently working installed on my 270....

couple things...

do you have a modified 6 cyl distributor? stock off of a 250 will not work
without some minor modifications

you just need one 12v wire from a switch to the BAT terminal on the cap, if
you dont have any spark and the engine is cranking there is something bad in
the distributor modules are common failures

from my own expirience...

I dropped in a complete distributor from a 250 into my 270 and hooked it to
power, because at first glance it looked like it would work... it did,
kinda... the pickup fired right up and ran until I got to my gauges and saw
O psi on the oil the tang that drives the oil pump wasnt long enough to
reach after I measured closely I figured out I was only catching 1/2 the
drive gear too I ended up cutting apart my old distributor and robbing
the shaft to build a longer tang for the HEI, I also flipped the drive gear
over and now it fits perfectly it took me about 2 hours to redo it it
fits and looks like it was made for the pickup and I love not having points
(I never had much luck or skill with them)

good luck
         Dustin

Getting my new engine started from scratch with a HEI dist and coil.
Looking to wire up ignition only just to ensure the engine is running OK
prior to installing any sheet metal, etc. I'm using a single wire
alternator, GMC 270, 12V system. I'm starting with no existing wire. I
have a new harness but don't plan to install until further along in the
project. I believe I have the basic ignition hooked up correctly. Engine
cranks over OK but doesn't indicate any oil pressure, glass bowl on fuel
pump not filling and doesn't appear to be any spark. Even if out of time I
should have spark. I've hooked up some cheap gauges, oil, amp, temp, to
monitor the vitals.

Next move is to try priming the oil pump with the drill process, right?

Shouldn't my fuel bowl be filling after cranking over several times? I'm
using a gas can and filter to feed the pump.

Does anyone have a simple HEI diagram?
