thanks wayne, my shop manual shows just about the same thing...but your
saying there are gears are inside this driven gear thing i removed, i'll
check it out tonight and get back to you guys next monday! :)

I'm not really sure what part you removed, but if you put the cable into
the part you did remove and the cable won't turn and appears frozen--you'll
have to take it apart and see. I think off the tailshaft is a long metal
rod with gears on the end that mesh with the tailshaft and the other end
meshes with the drive gear, the drive gear turns the calibration gear and
this gear is where the speedo cable goes into. Here's a link to an exploded
view of a 4 speed tranny--although your may differ the concept is pretty
much the same..

Notice item 48-49-50 in the bottom right corner... On this tranny the
speedo cable goes directly into this shaft--as far as I can tell. The
tailshaft turns this shaft and you get speed feedback. Other trannies have
plastic gear sets that can be change if the speedo is reading
incorrectly.. --wayne
