The only rear end I have taken apart is the one in my '59.

Remove the centre rear cover and in the centre of the spider gears is a
spacer block. If memory serves me correctly it is held in with a bolt
running through the centre. You will need to remove this bolt, but be
careful because it holds the small, spider gears in place as well. I was
able to drop the bolt part way out and then remove the spacer block and then
I reinserted the block.

Once this spacer block is out of the way you should be able to push the
axles in slightly and the end of the axle shafts have a groove that a 'C'
clip sits. With the axle pushed towards the centre, this clip will come out
and then you can pull the axles out.

If it is the original rear end you may want to replace the 'C' clips as
well. My spacer block and 'C' clips were worn and a 'C' clip fell out, then
the right rear axle came out. Yes disaster!

If you don't have a service manual I would highly suggest getting one. You
may need torque specs for reassembly if you plan to replace all the
bearings.

Hi, i'm currently taking apart my rear-end ('57 chevy 3100 1/2 ton stepside)
because i wan't to overhaul it and have it sandblasted and powdercoated in
one
go.
I don't know if it is the original rear-end one the truck (it's a 10 bolt
rear-end in my case) but that is of no importance to me.

My question: i'm not familiar with the rear-end's of U.S. cars and just
can't
figure-out how to remove the axles from it.
Do i knock off the inner ring at the wheel-hubs to reach a bolt/bearing? or
do
i have to start inside near the ring and pinion and have to take that apart
first?
