  Robert,   If you were replacing the steering gear box with a newer one and 
using the stock steering column, then you would need to use a bearing in the 
bottom of the column to keep the inter shaft inline with the outer shaft (cover 
tube).
    Since you are keeping the original gearbox, and replacing the steering 
column, you don't need to worry about using a bearing. Cut off the column as 
close to the gearbox as possible, leaving enough to be able to put a u-joint on 
the shaft coming out of the gearbox. The length of the shaft coming out of the 
gearbox is not that critical as long as you don't cut in the area of the seal 
of the gearbox. Mount your new steering column, as you see fit,(whatever YOU 
feel comfortable with.) Then buy u-joints and steering shaft stock to make up 
the difference. If you use more than 2 u-joints, then you will need to buy and 
use a support bearing that mounts to the frame. This will hold the middle 
section of your new steering shaft stable and allow the u-joints to do their 
job.
