I measured the column in my '57 GMC.  It is just under 28" from the top
of the shaft to the seal that the shaft goes through before it exits the
cab.  But I have carpet in my truck, so that seal is probably about 1/2"
closer to the top of the shaft than it would be if you were measuring
all the way to the metal of the floorboard.
