But I have yet to find anything that degreases engines better than oven 
cleaner.  Haven't tried it on aluminum heads though.  Anyone got anything 
better?

It's lye (NaOH?) and it's nasty.  There are acids and bases.  Lye is a
strong base.  Some oven cleaners claim to be lye free;  I've no idea what is
in them.
