I would get a Miller (www.millerwelds.com), but that of course depends on
budget. The sheetmetal guy at work (I work a well known auto restoration
shop), Won't touch anything else, of course an entry level Miller is a
little more than a Lincoln etc... But is well worth it in quality and resale
value (most welding supply places also have no problem with trade up deals
also). I would think being in the Chicago area there would be real welding
supply stores. Use the website to locate a retailer and to verify that your
price range. If not the Lincoln is a nice hobbyist unit. I bought a Daytona
Mig (www.daytonamig.com) a few years back while in school because price was
right and they also do trades. It is a 110 unit (was renting and didn't want
to rewire a rental) but as the aforementioned metal guy says every time he
is in my present shop it is the biggest damn 110 he has ever seen (does 1/4
plate according to specs, never have tried). This welder has severed my
needs well, light metal work (lotus frame, some furniture, art, .....) So go
Miller, then if that is to high I would go Daytona, then Lincoln, just get
one that uses gas, flux core may be cheaper to buy but makes a sloppy weld
and you will end up losing money cleaning it up.
