Latex is a true allergy, which means some people are allergic and some are
not.  I certainly wouldn't put being allergic to latex in the same category
with cancer, so I'd say using gloves of any sort is preferable to no gloves.

Personally, I use nitrile (when I use anything at all) just because it
stands up to petroleum (and my perspiration) better.  I believe most
hospitals now use vinyl.
