James, If they're not worn out they're probably better. I think the gas shocks were an option form the MKIII onward. My early, early MKIV (12/70) had had rear shocks marked Pressureized / DeCarbon ... they were pretty rusted like the rest of the car and I didn't keep 'em ... wish I did...
