10 + years working in an auto shop taught me that visual inspection or
hand pressure will only find the really bad ones.  You should put a
large screwdriver or prybar into the yoke and try to move the u-joint
going across the joint (push the joint towards the front or back of the
car).  Any play at all and the u-joint should be replaced.  Also, even
when the u-joints don't have play they can be 'frozen' and can cause the
drive shaft to shake or thump.  Other things to look at for the noise
are the differential, tranny and engine mounts.
