Has anyone tried any of the various "coatings" available for the gas
tanks?

Hi Craig,
I took mine to a local rad shop...for $15 dollars they flushed it, checked
for leaks and replaced the float with a new brass unit (the original was
starting to fill with gas). Seemed like a worthwhile investment.
