All indications are of a short still in the system, though it may be
through a mis-wired device such as the windshield wipers or tachometer,
both of which are generally negatively switched instead of postively
switched like many vehicles.

My suggestion is to disconnect the battery and connect a test light
(good
ol' generic test light) between the battery cable and the battery terminal.
Turn off EVERYTHING in the car. If the light goes on, then there is still
either an accesory still on or a short someplace in the system. Now start
pulling fuses (what there are in a Spit) and see if the light goes out. If
so, the one that you just pulled has the defective circuit in it somewhere.
If not, start disconnecting other likely culprits including the voltage
regulator and generator. It's a bit of hunt and peck, but much easier than
guessing. You will find it in this manner. At least then you'll know it's
not a tail light causing the problem when you're digging under the dash. :)
