Yes, of course.  As Donald has pointed out in a different e-mail, you
can't do this to an alternator, only to a generator - Zach, check which
you have first!  (I suspect that when the old engine was dropped in, it
included the old +ve ground generator, so changing the polarity will be
ok...)
