main bearing cap. wonderful word. You are right. The grooves were towards
the crankshaft (for the oil). The main bearing cap shows the wear at the
back end, almost big enough to put a third TW in.

What is a lower holder?  The main bearing cap?
Are you sure you're installing them (the TW's) properly?
The groove in the TW goes towards (touches, rubs on...) the moving part,
which is the crankshaft, not the block.
