Because that is not your "dash" you are drilling into. If you took your
dash off you would realize it is only wood, but that it mounts onto a metal
frame which is a part of the car body and not the dash.

Hmmm, if there is no metal backing how come I can stick a magnet onto the
back of my dash and when I drill it I get metal filings?
BTW, I am starting on a project to make a solid Walnut Burl dash with extra
gauges and of course a hand rubbed finish to replace the plywood/veneer dash
which is somewhat warped and badly delaminating.

The cutouts are actually what is left from the Mark I's and II's, and the
internal vents from the GT-6. The only metal on the back of any of the
'79s I have owned was the tab where they bolted in and a reinforcement ring
around one of the gauges.
