While you're mentioning U-joints. I used to go through a U-joint every 6
months
on the drive shaft of my 1500. And I've heard multiple accounts of U-joint
breakages.
I knew when it was going, when the rod bearings (spider?) started to
fall-out of the cup, it would sound like change hitting the ground.

Which made me quite happy when I received my U-joints from Ted Schumacher.
He carries
a nice sealed U-joint with fitting for easy greasing.

I haven't used it yet. But it looks a bit more reliable than the stock
units my local LBC shop gives me every 6 months.

And now for MY Spit driving experience for the day...Thanks to watching Pat
Goss and asking the members of the list, I switched to a low octane fuel
the other day, and was greeted with a nice smooth even idle at stop lights
on my 50 mile drive today (hopefully, my religious monthy addition of carb
cleaner has kept the 93 octane from building up too much carbon deposits.)

My electronic fuel pump has been running okay for the past few days, but
today...when I hit highway speed (~60mph) the car started to jerk and
sputter..After pulling over and adjusting the pressure in the line up (I
think I'm around 4lbs. of pressure in the line) I was able to continue on
without problem. I ran aluminum 3/8" pipe from the pump to the ZS carb, and
I figure the larger diameter might be the reason it requires so much pressure.

I removed the resistive wire from going to my coil, thanks to the
instructions by Patrick Baize. I assumed this modification would cause a
bit more fire in the plugs. But it appeared to have little if any affect on
the car (the coil is a 40k volt coil). Still a nice smooth idle.

I was under the hood replacing the wire and installing the summer
thermostat, then later got a burger and finally went out for coffee this
evening. In all, I received three "Nice car!"'s and one "So, she won't
start huh?"

Today, I also received the Amco "chrome bumper guard" that I won off of
E-bay..which turns out will only fit a Mark IV spit/GT6-III. I assumed that
the MkIV and 1500 had the same front end and it should work fine, but it
turns out the guard is restricted by the size of the rubber over-riders. As
soon as I get some photos of it, I'll be placing it on the Triumph Auction
site so that someone can use it. (The proceeds of which will go to Mark
Bradakis since I was such a tight-wad when he asked for money to support
the list a few months ago.)

Any listers in Maryland want to help me install an electronic distributor
and allison ignition? (This car is my daily driver, and I don't want to
screw this up, otherwise I'll be driving my stake-body truck to work every
day). And the truck's not exactly a fun vehicle to drive in the summer (or
any weather...as it has all leaf spring, no shock, suspension).
