Mine was similar, and the fellow helping me replace the clutch said it was
the rear engine seal. We replaced it, and it was neither difficult nor
expensive.

Subject: oil in bellhousing

Folks now I have the gearbox out I started cleaning up the outside. Years of
oil and dirt. But in side teh bellhousing was also a mess. The flywheel and
old clutch (still attached) are clean. IS this just old muck that has come
in via the various openings or is there a potential leak from the gearbox?

Any easy way to tell? I had drained and refilled the gearbox previously. On
draining I got out the clean oil. No sign of the clean oil in the
bellhousing though.
