Jean-Marc,

If it was a mistake, it was one that was repeated time and time again!  While 
early Triumphs (TR2, 3, 4, etc.) did recommend running
engine oil in the transmissions, I don't it holds true of Spitfires.  

Down here in Arizona, 80-90 wt gear oil flows like water!!!
