Slapback exhaust when decelerating?

Subject: Slapback exhaust when decelerating?

Mrs. Jones is running teriffic from my vantage point. No more particles of
gunk coming out of the tailpipe now that I've leaned out the mixture
somewhat. The other day, I was coasting down a nearby hill, using my engine
compression to slow the decent and I noticed a sound that I've not heard
before. Sort of a wet slapping sound out of the exhaust pipe. Intermittent
and not what I would characterize as a backfire, but more a (pardon the term
ladies) wet fart.

Can someone please enlighten me as to what this signifies, other than
perhaps that I need to add a few drops of Beano to my next tankful of
petrol?

TIA

Best wishes,

Jeff in San Diego
