Just an idea for you guys who have smaller capacity compressors. I have a
Campbell Hausfeld 5 HP/20 gal version and like others found that it did note
have enough capacity for some of my tools. I got a used propane tank, a 100#
capacity size, and removed the original fittings and then inverted it on a
bracket so that the condensation would drain out of it when plumbed it into
the system. It made a big difference when using the likes of the air chisel,
paint sprayer etc as now there is that extra reserve to call on for the
short duration draws. Since the propane industry is highly regulated and the
tanks are tested to something in excess of 300 psi, a used one that is out
of date is generally free at any large distributor as it costs too much to
re-certify them but they are still good for this use (provided you are using
a max of say 150/200 psi in the system). A buddy of mine has had one in his
system for over 10 years and it still is good and sound.
Just something to consider, also if you are plumbing your shop for air use
at least 3/4 " pipes as that will allow a lot more system capacity as well.
